Singapore Reddit users have raised questions over Singapore's prohibition on dual citizenship after a Reddit user claimed to hold both Singapore and New Zealand passports while expressing plans to obtain Australian and Canadian citizenship in future.

The discussion began on 29 June 2026 after a post appeared in the Reddit community "r/PassportPorn", showing a Singapore passport placed beside a New Zealand passport.

The post was captioned: "22M | My next step is to get an Australian Passport and onto Canada."

Reddit post sparks questions

The images quickly attracted attention from Singaporean Reddit users, many of whom questioned whether the poster had breached Singapore's laws on dual citizenship.

Singapore law does not generally permit dual citizenship.

While minors may hold dual nationality until the age of 21, they are generally required to choose one citizenship upon reaching that age.

Applications may also be rejected if a male citizen has not fulfilled obligations under the Enlistment Act.

Under the Constitution, the Government may revoke the citizenship of individuals aged above 18 who voluntarily acquire or renew a foreign passport, or who use a foreign passport for travel.

Poster says New Zealand is "home"

In response to questions, the original poster said he had been a New Zealand citizen for three years.

"I don't like Singapore and haven't lived in since leaving when I was 15. So I decided to take in NZ citizenship as I consider it my home," the user wrote.

One Redditor asked: "How long have you had NZ for? I heard with NZ you can keep PR for life even outside the country - was the sole reason for getting dual so you could live in Australia?"

The poster also said his long-term plans were outside Singapore, stating that he intended to obtain Australian citizenship before eventually pursuing Canadian citizenship.

OP claims losing Singapore citizenship "not a big deal"

Several Reddit users cautioned the poster about Singapore's stance on dual citizenship.

Responding to those concerns, the poster wrote: "Both countries don't actively communicate, it is Australia and Singapore that does."

The user further claimed to know "someone who works in the Department of Internal Affairs here in NZ" and added that "I have 0 intentions to return and live in Singapore therefore losing my SG citizenship is not a big deal since I have a direct pathway to the Aus passport as an NZ citizen."

When another Reddit user asked how both passports had been retained, the poster replied: "Never informed them I'm taking on another citizenship."

National Service obligation and travel claims

Some users also questioned whether the poster had defaulted on National Service obligations.

The poster denied doing so, claiming he had been exempted because of a medical injury.

"I was not required to serve due to a medical injury, therefore no problems for me. I had to return for my medical screening to get my $65k bond from CMPB," the user wrote.

The poster also claimed to have entered and departed Singapore using a Singapore passport.

After another Reddit user suggested Singapore authorities would detect the situation, the poster replied: "Then they're not doing their job as I've entered and left without being questioned."

Other Reddit users disputed the claim, warning that they knew people who had eventually been detected by the authorities.

One commenter wrote: "No big deal you can just pay up, renounce your Singaporean passport and be done with it. At least you won't be thrown in Changi for evading NS!"

The poster reiterated there were no plans to return to Singapore, writing: "My SG passport will expire in 8 years but I'll either have my AU passport by then or already working towards a Canada one."

Responding to another Singaporean Reddit user's question, the poster said the family relocated after Primary 6 when the user's mother moved to New Zealand for work.

The poster also described studying for an engineering degree and said employment opportunities had been readily available, claiming to have secured a summer internship and to have been employed five times since the age of 15.

The Online Citizen has written to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority seeking clarification on the issues raised, including Singapore's enforcement of dual citizenship laws and measures used to detect undeclared foreign citizenship.
