The Johor state legislative assembly was dissolved on Monday, 1 June 2026, setting the stage for the state's 16th general election since its first polls were held in 1955.

Mentri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced the dissolution at a special press conference held at Saujana in Johor Baru on Monday evening, following a morning audience with Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

Onn Hafiz said the dissolution was intended to allow Johor's electorate to choose a new state government and deliver a fresh mandate to advance the state's development agenda.

"The Election Commission will now undertake the necessary process to determine the dates for nomination, early voting and polling," he said.

The Election Commission is expected to announce the election timeline in the coming days, setting out the schedule for candidate nomination, early voting, and polling day.

Johor last went to the polls in March 2022, when Barisan Nasional secured a commanding two-thirds majority by winning 40 of the 56 seats in the state legislative assembly.

The upcoming contest will be the 16th state election in Johor's history.
