CHINA: Chinese robotics company UBTECH has officially launched the UWORLD U1 Series, a new lineup of humanoid robots designed for consumer and commercial applications.

The launch took place during the company's 2026 Global Launch Event in Shenzhen on 30 June, where UBTECH outlined its long-term vision of integrating humanoid robots into everyday life.

According to the company, the UWORLD U1 Series is the world's first mass-produced full-size ultra-bionic humanoid robot lineup.

The range includes three models: the semi-torso U1 Lite, the full-body U1 Pro and the higher-performance U1 Ultra.

One of the highlights of the launch event was a stage performance featuring a female humanoid robot dancing a waltz alongside a human male dancer.

The company said the U1 Series features 88 degrees of freedom and a proprietary dual-pivot biomimetic cervical spine, enabling it to replicate up to 90 per cent of fundamental human movements.


Focus on emotional AI and companionship

UBTECH positioned the U1 Series as more than a traditional service robot, presenting it as a long-term companion capable of social interaction and emotional support.

According to the company, the robots are powered by an emotion-aware large language model capable of recognising more than 20 emotional states with an accuracy rate exceeding 90 per cent.

The system also incorporates what UBTECH describes as a biomimetic "fast-and-slow brain" architecture, combining rapid instinctive responses with more advanced reasoning capabilities.

A memory system known as Agent Memory OS is designed to allow the robots to retain long-term contextual information and personalise interactions over time.

The company said the robots are capable of wake-word-free interaction, allowing them to respond proactively to environmental cues and social situations.

Expansion beyond industrial robotics

During the launch event, UBTECH founder, chairman and chief executive officer James Zhou described the company's vision for the future of human-robot collaboration.

He outlined a three-stage development path, beginning with robots handling dangerous and repetitive work, followed by integration into daily life through companionship and service applications, and ultimately progressing towards deeper human-robot interaction.

Zhou said UBTECH is transitioning from a traditional robotics manufacturer into a broader AI and robotics platform company.

The company has already established a presence in industrial robotics through its Walker humanoid robot series and says it ranked first globally by revenue and sales volume for full-sized embodied intelligent humanoid robots in 2025.

Applications range from homes to hospitality

UBTECH said the U1 Series is intended for a wide range of uses, including companionship, emotional support, elder care, hospitality services, reception duties, tourism, education and research.

The company believes humanoid companionship could become a major new consumer category, particularly as ageing populations and rising numbers of people living alone create demand for social support technologies.

According to figures cited during the event, China has more than 90 million adults living alone and around 118 million older adults living without family members.

Human-robot companionship initiative announced

Alongside the product launch, UWORLD announced a "Human-Robot Companionship Initiative" aimed at supporting vulnerable groups.

The company said it plans to donate 100 customised humanoid robots in 2026 to children growing up apart from one or both parents, older adults living alone, and families facing difficult circumstances.

According to UBTECH, the customised units will incorporate technologies such as 3D facial reconstruction, voiceprint replication, emotional interaction models and long-term memory systems to provide personalised companionship and psychological support.

From teaser videos to official launch

The official launch follows weeks of anticipation generated by teaser videos released by UBTECH earlier in June.

The company first introduced the UWORLD brand on 1 June through a short video showing the silhouette of a humanoid robot in formal attire.

A second teaser released on 8 June revealed male and female U1 Pro models dressed in formal clothing and highlighted features including emotional AI, memory functions, local data encryption and customisable appearances.

The videos generated widespread discussion online, with some users expressing excitement about the technology's potential while others questioned the realism, privacy implications and societal impact of increasingly human-like robots.

The official unveiling on 30 June provided the first comprehensive look at the product lineup, capabilities and long-term strategy behind UBTECH's expansion into consumer humanoid robotics.
